Digital Media Communications

Overview
The Digital Media Communications (DMC) course is a 9th grade technology class that focuses on the rapidly changing world of media and the transformation that digital technologies have brought to the communication of entertainment and information. In the first semester of this program, students will develop and participate in creative thinking and design activities using digital media, focusing on emerging topics in Earth and Energy Science Essentials (E3). Students will later work in small teams to produce a multimedia project that communicates information about climate change to a specified audience. This project will be delivered on a Web site and will incorporate research delivered through animations, simulations, and documentary short films. Digital Media Communications students will have the opportunity to present their work at the annual Connecticut Student Innovation EXPO and the Connecticut Student Film Festival.

2009–10 Challenge
imageIn conjunction with Earth and Energy Science Essentials, students will develop a multimedia project for a specific audience. This project will communicate factual information about a scientific understanding related to our rapidly changing climate. Students will research and collect data and deliver a hypothesis through animations, simulations, Web sites, and documentary shorts.

Student Meetings/Experiential Learning Dates
Throughout the school year, DMC and E3 participants will have the opportunity to work with digital media professionals and scientists at related venues and colleges. Students will also receive invitations to presentations and meetings from members of the scientific community that will be conducted in our Second Life environment. Information on where and when will be listed shortly.

The 2010 CT Student Innovation Expo
The culminating event for all students is the CT EXPO, May 7–8, 2010, at the CT Convention Center.

What Do You Do in Digital Media Communications?

DMC students will work on individual assignments at the beginning of the year. These individual assignments will provide each student with the opportunity to use multiple Web applications and resources to complete their own digital media and film productions. This individual work includes the creation of a Web page, animation, logo, public service announcement, virtual presentation, and a news report. After the successful completion of these projects, each student will form a small team in a project-based learning environment to produce and market a final multimedia project related to our changing climate. This project will be presented at the Connecticut Student Innovation EXPO and the Connecticut Student Film Festival.
